In this Taster Session you will see samples of some of the ways a mimio can be used to help integrate the curriculum in the classroom programme from Juniors through to seniors; inside, as well as outside the classroom.


Examining Inquiry Learning

In order to develop a fully integrated inquiry focused classroom we need to understand what makes effective learning and teaching. This taster session will develop the concept of the role of the teacher in the inquiry process. John Hattie’s recently published research paper from the University of Auckland says: ‘ It is what teachers know, do and care about which is very powerful in this learning equation.’
The session will look at effective teaching, creating a learning environment and developing models of support. It will also explore how inquiry and e-learning can fit in a classroom programme.


Tactical Teaching: Thinking

How effectively do you teach thinking?
Do you understand the difference between critical, creative and metacognitive thinking? Do you know when to use particular thinking skills and strategies and how to adapt activities?
Are you regularly and effectively using and modeling a variety of thinking strategies and processes for your students? Are you using the language of thinking? Are your students transferring their thinking skills to all areas of the curriculum?
Tactical Teaching: Thinking is a practical, hands-on course for teachers.
During workshops, we will:
*Define critical, creative and metacognitive thinking
*Explore the importance of teaching thinking
*Examine activities that provide guided practice for the thinking processes and for using thinking tools and strategies in all areas of the curriculum.

Beyond the Typewriter

Albert Einstein said "The secret of creativity is knowing how to hide your sources." The use of images in student work is often an add on that is easily traced back to Google's image search. We do not allow students to copy and paste words from Google and submit them as their own work, yet we allow students to copy and paste images from Google into their work often without acknowledging the source. In this session we explore desktop publishing principles that allow students to take images and to "put them into their own words" so that they become an important part of their media layout.

This is a practical session where Linda will work in Pages to introduce a variety of techniques that can be used to manipulate and modify graphics. Bring your laptop.

Google SketchUp 7 (Steve Lines - SIS)


Sketchup is a fantastic, easy to use drawing package that is a free download. In this taster session you will learn about the capabilities of this powerful programme and how to use it in your classroom. For students of all ages SketchUp adds a new dimension allowing the user to draw, manipulate and create wonderful 3D models and images. Students can quickly learn to model anything they can imagine. The package is backed by dozens of help videos, an extensive Help Centre and a world - wide user community. Most people get rolling with SketchUp in just a few minutes. Your students can build models from scratch, or you can download what you need from the extensive Google 3D warehouse. There’s no limit to what you can create with SketchUp.

Board for a Day

In this taster session we will look at a variety of ways to include the use of an interactive whiteboard in classroom programmes, from the start of the day until the finish. We will explore how an interactive whiteboard can be used to enhance the effectiveness of programmes in the classroom and be put to good use in all curriculum areas.

LEGO MINDSTORMS Education NXT is the next generation in educational robotics, enabling students to discover Science, Technology, Engineering and Math in a fun, engaging, and hands-on way. It is not a remote control toy. It uses logic programming to do EXACTLY as you tell it do and even has sensors which demonstrate the begginings of Artificial Intelligence. Trying to keep this introductory session as hands on as possible you will work in small groups, each group will be given a ready made robot and computer with the educational software loaded. Work through the interactive tutorials at your own pace and maybe get your robots to dance with our 2008 NZ champion dancing droids.
